Communication, coming of age, and maturity are underlying metaphors that string together the titles of “Romantic Electrons” - a new release in electronic chill/downtempo/and ambient music. The metaphors are fitting as this new release is Nathan Speir’s tenth full length solo artist release.
“Ten being a number of new beginnings and start of a new cycle, I wanted to produce a little different sound from previously released acoustic ambient and solo piano recordings,” comments Speir on the new album. “I knew there was a plethora of choices I had on sound design, and I narrowed down my choices to some more familiar flavors from past decades. Being a licensed electrician, I decided to weave in some electronic terms into a somewhat ‘romantic story for electrons’. I also tried to be inclusive with my day job as a licensed electrician, with some fictional humor and a few cohesive life metaphors at the same time.” Nathan’s last release in 2017, Part of a Kindly Plan, was an acoustic ambient album that charted on the top ten ZMR charts.
“Romantic Electrons” has a cohesive variety of tracks beginning with “Charged on the Drizzle” having a catchy baseline, downtempo drums, and an atmospheric piano line finally counterpointed with a driving arpeggiated analog chorus. Following are three more ‘upbeat’ and refreshing sounding tracks “Analog Transit”, “Admittance”, and “Waveguide”, which arguably have a touch of nu-jazz harmony to them. A tribal ambient type piece surfaces on “Floating Ground”. A beautiful electronic piano slowly bathed in flowering pads happen next in “Late Blossom”. Then “Lost Proton” brings a more psychedelic and darker track into the mix with its grungy bass, avant-garde violin, and trip-hop drums. “Propagation” goes back to the slower, non-percussive, organically arpeggiated analog sound one would maybe expect from the circle of German based space music in the late eighties and early nineties (a personal favorite electronic genre for Nathan Speir). A much more minimal and less melodic atmosphere follows on “Relaxation Oscillation”. “S.I.P” (Session Initiation Protocol) has a slightly panned and muffled club beat underneath a floating piano and synth lead line which sounds somewhat thru-composed. The final track “Telegraphy” has a synthesized duduk carrying the melody over a shifting set of beats that are enveloped in a shimmering synth pad at the end.
Chill, downtempo, tribal ambient, trippy, with a touch of some new and familiar synth sounds and composition styles, “Romantic Electrons” has a pleasantly refreshing and cohesive variety for the electronic music enthusiast.
